Bed wetting is very common for younger kids, but why do some teenagers and adults do it too? The scientific name for the condition is enuresis and it happens more often than you realize. There are lots of reasons for this and it usually needs to be diagnosed by a doctor. Keep reading to learn what some of the common causes for bed wetting may be.
In many cases bedwetting can be related to genetics. The exact cause is not yet known but genetics is usually to blame when bedwetting is discovered at ages when it wouldn't be expected to happen anymore. The reality of it is if one of your parents had bedwetting issues there's a good chance you will too, and if BOTH parents suffered this way you can count on having the same issue. The good news is there are many treatments available. Bed wetting is sometimes caused by hormone issues, ADH in particular. This is the hormone that is responsible for urine production by your kidneys, especially while you are asleep. An imbalance in ADH can happen for a variety of reasons, all of which cause more urine than usual to be made. This can make you need to go to the bathroom during the day as well as night when you might end up wetting the bed. Diabetes is just one of the reasons this hormone can be imbalanced so it is vital for you to have the right medical tests performed to figure out why it has happened. Once you have identified this as the cause of your bed wetting there are ways you can normalize your ADH levels.
People who drink large amounts of alcohol might have difficulties with bed wetting. Drinking large amounts of any beverage increases the need to urinate, but alcohol can also affect your sleep patterns and normal reflexes, so you may not wake up when you usually would. This is certainly the case if you drank a large amount of alcohol just before going to sleep. This isn't normally a hindrance if you only drink a small to a modest amount of alcohol. People who have this issue often are alcoholics, and this has many serious effects, besides wetting the bed, so help should be found. The only way to make sure that your bed wetting isn't caused by a serious problem is to figure out the root of the condition. No matter what the reason is, you are probably anxious to find it because finding it is the only reason to treat it. These are not the only causes for bed wetting so if it is happening to you, you should call your doctor.
